Indian Navy Rescues Hijacked Iranian and Pakistani Fishing Vessels

India's naval forces continue to demonstrate their commitment to maritime security by successfully rescuing a hijacked fishing vessel off the coast of Somalia. In a statement released on Tuesday, the Indian navy confirmed that they had rescued the Iranian-flagged vessel, Al Naeemi, and its 19-member Pakistani crew from the clutches of Somali pirates.

This operation marks the third successful rescue in a week involving Somali pirates. Just a day before, India's forces had freed another Iranian fishing vessel, Iman, along with its 17 crew members, from pirates operating in the same waters. Prior to that, the Seychelles’ defense forces and coast guard had also rescued six Sri Lankan fishermen after their vessel was hijacked by Somali pirates.

The Indian navy's latest operation unfolded on Monday when they intercepted the hijacked vessel and forced the pirates to release both the crew and the boat. Reportedly, 11 Somali pirates had boarded the Al Naeemi before being apprehended by the Indian naval troops. Images released by the navy showed the pirates with their hands tied behind them, being guarded by armed Indian naval personnel. Other images exhibited armed pirates on the vessel.

The piracy incident occurred in international waters approximately 850 nautical miles (1,570 kilometers) west of the Indian coastal city of Kochi. The naval forces did not disclose the fate of the pirates responsible for the hijacking. However, it is clear that their mission was successful in thwarting the pirates' intentions and ensuring the safety of the crew.

The Indian navy's intensified efforts to combat piracy comes amidst global disruptions in shipping caused by the attacks of Yemen-based Houthi rebels in the Red Sea since November. To counter these threats, India has deployed three guided missile destroyers and reconnaissance aircraft to the vast Indian Ocean. In addition to conducting anti-piracy missions, the navy has also provided assistance to four merchant vessels that were attacked in the high seas during Israel's conflict with Hamas.

The Indian navy's swift and effective response to piracy incidents highlights their dedication to maintaining security in the maritime domain. Through their consistent efforts, they have exemplified their willingness to go above and beyond to protect international waters and ensure the safety of sailors from various nations. As piracy incidents continue to pose threats to global trade and seafarers, the actions of the Indian navy stand as a testament to the importance of international collaboration in combating this issue.
