Indian mixed doubles curling team finished runners-up in WCT; medal winners felicitated

NEW DELHI: The Indian team shone bright at the recently held 21st Curling Cup World Curling Tour (WCT) Mixed Doubles 2022, securing the runners-up finish in a highly-competitive field in Kazakhstan’s capital of Almaty.

The tournament, which took place from May 26-29, saw the participation of 12 mixed doubles teams from across the world. The Indian pair of P N Raju and Akgul Kumar finished in the second position in the $8,000 prize money championship, with the Kazakh team of Muzdybay Kudaibergenov and Kristina Kolykhalova emerging the winners.

Upon their return to India, the Curling Federation of India (CFI) president, Dr Rashmi Saluja, felicitated the medal winners at a glittering ceremony here on the weekend, which was attended by London Olympics bronze medallist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt and Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) secretary general, Rajeev Mehta. On the occasion, Saluja also wished good luck to the Indian curling team for the Indo-Kazakhstan Curling Championships.

Saluja, executive chairperson of the Religare Enterprises Limited, presented kits to the players, who will participate at the Indo-Kazakh meet. The official Team India jersey was also unveiled during the felicitation ceremony.

The Kazakhstan Mixed Doubles Curling Cup is part of the World Curling Tour that connects the world’s most high-profile events in elite curling. Organised by the World Curling Federation, it enlists participation from national teams worldwide in the MD category.

“We are happy with the Indian team’s victory in the WCT. I extend my best wishes to the players for their singular achievement,” Saluja added.
