Indian archers end with five medals in World Cup Stage IV

KOLKATA: It’s double delight for India as their compound archers won both the men’s and women’s team gold medals in the World Cup Stage 4 in Paris on Saturday.

Earlier, the recurve archers too claimed a double picking up bronze in both men’s and women’s team events on Friday.

India thus ended campaign with five medals that included two gold and three bronze, and five archers (four compound, one recurve) making the cut for World Cup Finals to be held at Hermosillo in Mexico next month.

While the fourth-seeded men’s compound team of Abhishek Verma, Ojas Deotale and Prathamesh Jawkar downed second-seeded American trio of Kris Schaff, James Lutz and Sawyer Sullivan 236-232, the women’s trio of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur — fresh from their World Championship gold in Berlin — survived a scare before prevailing over Mexico by one point 234-233.

“Winning back-to-back medals gives a lot of confidence because we also have a major tournament – the Asian Games – coming up,” Jyothi said.

Later, Jyothi returned to win bronze in the individual category beating five-time World Cup gold medal winner Sara Lopez of Spain in a tie-breaker after both archers were tied 146-146 at the end of five ends.

It was an all-round show as the recurve archers too ended up making the podium. The men’s team of Dhiraj Bommadevara, Atanu Das and Tushar Prabhakar Shelke came from behind to beat Spanish trio Pablo Acha, Yun Sanchez and Andres Temino 6-2 to win bronze.

The women’s team of Bhajan Kaur, Ankita Bhakat and Simranjeet Kaur beat Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia, Angela Ruiz and Aida Roman in a shoot-off.
