India announced on Monday that it is recalling its ambassador and other diplomats from Canada following the rejection of a Canadian notification labeling the ambassador as a 'person of interest' in the assassination of a Sikh activist last year.
The Indian foreign ministry released a statement expressing its disapproval of the Canadian allegations, stating that the targeting of the Indian high commissioner and other diplomats was unfounded and unacceptable. The ministry also summoned the top Canadian diplomat in New Delhi to convey its concerns.
India's decision to withdraw its High Commissioner and other diplomats was based on the lack of confidence in the Canadian government's commitment to ensuring their security, as mentioned in the statement.
In September of last year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had made claims of credible allegations linking the Indian government to the assassination of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. India promptly dismissed these accusations as baseless and absurd.
Efforts to obtain comments from Canada's foreign ministry, foreign minister, and the prime minister's office in Ottawa were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
