India recorded a current account deficit (CAD) of $2 billion in May 2026, compared with a surplus of $0.7 billion in the same month last year, as a sharp increase in merchandise imports outpaced export growth, according to preliminary balance of payments data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The country's merchandise trade deficit widened to $27.9 billion in May 2026 from $22.6 billion a year earlier. Merchandise exports rose to $46.1 billion from $38.7 billion, while imports surged to $74 billion from $61.3 billion during the period.
