India locks down capital city as protests against election chief intensify

Central Delhi was put under a police lockdown as the youth-led “cockroach” movement sought to organise protests in the India capital on 10 October, intensifying a nationwide campaign against a contentious revision of voter lists and fuelling anger against Narendra Modi’s government and the country’s election authorities.

Thousands of protesters were expected at Jantar Mantar, the designated protest site in the city, to demand the resignation of the country’s election chief, prompting authorities to impose sweeping restrictions, including suspension of mobile internet.
