The Indian team management, led by head coach and captain Gautam Gambhir, opted to include Washington Sundar instead, citing South Africa’s left-heavy top order as the primary reason for the tactical change. However, the move failed to pay off, as Sundar delivered an underwhelming performance in India’s 76-run defeat.
While Jasprit Bumrah removed both Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton early, Sundar struggled against the middle order, bowling only two overs for 17 runs at an economy of 8.5, and was comfortably handled by David Miller and Dewald Brevis.
