Drones, camping and sky lanterns could all be banned on council land in North Tyneside following a public consultation.
The proposed bans follow, according to the council, an increase in complaints about “inappropriate activities”.
The consultation will end on September 25 2022 and aims to gather the views of the public on a draft proposal to ban several activities, including drone use and camping across council land.

The council’s land includes beaches, parks and sites of special scientific interest. This also includes St Mary’s Island and its nature reserve.
North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn CBE said: “We want to make sure that our award-winning parks, beaches, and other open spaces continue to be enjoyed safely by residents and visitors. It is also important that the environment and local wildlife are protected too. This new policy will make clear what type of activities can take place on council land, and people now have the opportunity to comment on our draft policy.”
Other activities which may no longer be tolerated include, bonfires, unauthorised fire pits and “intrusive” metal detecting. The use of motorbikes, quad bikes or mopeds on council land has also been called into question.
North Tyneside Council has issued advice to people who may wish to release sky lanterns as an act of remembrance to friends and family who have passed away. The council said it “recognises that such releases are often carried out as acts of memorial so instead would encourage more sustainable and eco-friendly acts of memorial such as jam jar lights, flying kites, or organising memory walks”.
If you wish to take part in the consultation you can complete a survey on the council’s website. Surveys should be completed by Sunday, September 25.
The survey is also available at the Customer First Centres at Whitley Bay, Wallsend, North Shields and Whitley Bay.
