A Nottinghamshire school, rated inadequate by Ofsted in January this year, has announced it is set to transfer to a new academy trust. Carlton le Willows, in Gedling, currently operates under Greater Nottingham Education Trust (GNET) as an original trust member but is set to transfer to Delta Academies Trust towards the end of 2023.
GNET, which was formed in 2016, has also announced it will begin the process of transferring another of its schools, Netherfield Primary School, to a different multi-academy trust. Academy trusts are responsible for employing the staff, as well as having trustees who are responsible for the performance of the academies in the trust.
This comes after Carlton le Willows, an 11–18 mixed, secondary school and sixth form, was given an overall effectiveness ranking of 'inadequate'. The Wood Lane school received 'requires improvement' rankings for the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and for the sixth-form provision when it was inspected from November 15 to 17, 2022

In a letter sent to parents and carers on May 17, Jon Garibaldi, the chair of the GNET, said: "I am writing to inform you that following an advisory board meeting on April 26 the regional director has agreed in principle for Carlton le Willows Academy to transfer to Delta Academies Trust.
"Delta will now begin a period of due diligence with Carlton le Willows. Netherfield Primary School remains under the control of GNET but a process is underway, in conjunction with the Department for Education to identify a suitable MAT in to which to transfer. "
The target date for Carlton le Willows to transfer is October 1, 2023. The move comes as the government announced it will be investing over £450 million in extra funding to improve school buildings, with Carlton le Willows one of the 859 academics, sixth form colleges and voluntary aided schools to benefit.
This new investment will upgrade and improve school and college facilities, providing pupils with safer and warmer classrooms, and more energy-efficient school buildings. Tom Randall MP, for Gedling, has welcomed the funding to upgrade school buildings across the country, including projects at Carlton le Willows Academy in Gedling.
This new investment will upgrade and improve school and college facilities, providing pupils with safer and warmer classrooms, and more energy-efficient school buildings. He said: "We have a world-leading education system but we must continue to invest in safe, warm and energy-efficient classrooms so pupils have the facilities they need to study effectively and succeed.
“That is why I welcome the news that the Conservative Government is investing an additional £456 million into our school buildings across the country, delivering over 1,000 building improvement projects, including at Carlton le Willows Academy in Gedling.
“Every school should have access to high-quality facilities and our investment will deliver this so pupils can develop the skills they need for their careers as we grow the economy.”
