Dundee is quite rightly proud of its three Js - Jute, Jam and Journalism - but is it about time the letter F was added in there too?
Dundee Live thinks it should because did you know that back in the day, the city was at the epicentre of the UK’s false teeth manufacturing industry?
At one stage during the mid 1960s, Dundee supplied most of the dentures for the National Health Service.
As our album shows here, the factory was based in a former mansion house near Monifieth called The Laws, Kingennie.
It was owned and run by a company called F.H Wright Dental Manufacturing Co that was founded in 1898.
As well as employees walking outside the stunning house, Dundee Live’s black and white photos show workers making sets of teeth and baking them in a huge kiln.
Wrights is still going strong and is now based in the city’s Dunsinane Industrial Estate.
It is renowned for providing support and outstanding service to Dental Practices and Dental Laboratories throughout the UK.
And as its website says “with over 100 years of clinical and dental experience, it’s extremely proud of its British roots”.
Frank Halley Wright founded the company in 1898 when providing a service to dentists and technicians in Dundee.
The business’ principles of maintaining the highest standards of service were established then, setting the foundations of the company.
From a small dental supplies office, to the world of Dentistry.
Nowadays, Wrights employs over 100 staff in its tooth manufacturing business.
In addition it has expanded the operation into Europe, South Africa and the USA.
It currently supplies over 30,000 different products, offering a next day delivery service to surgeries and labs.
It manufactures alginate - a cutting edge biomaterial used in modern medical science - teeth and denture base from its facilities both here and abroad.
