24-year-old FFXI is restricting new sign-ups again because of popularity

Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) Final Fantasy XI is locking down yet another high-population server due to congestion, with Square Enix suspending new character creation and paid world transfers to Odin starting March 10, much unlike the modern trend of games closing down soon after their release.

Odin is the game’s third-largest world, and the restriction is meant to reduce load after a sustained spike in new players and returning veterans that has kept the server crowded since the second half of 2025.

The change means two things for would-be Odin players: you won’t be able to create a brand-new character on Odin, and you also won’t be able to move an existing character to Odin via the Character World Transfer service.

This isn’t the first time Square Enix had to implement such drastic measures, as the company previously took similar action on Asura (the biggest server) and Bahamut (the second-largest). And with the Odin restriction, the game’s top three worlds will all be unavailable to new arrivals once March 10 hits.

Square Enix’s stated goal is to prevent concentration on a small number of worlds from causing knock-on issues that affect the overall experience, like system instability during large events, long queue times, and general performance problems that come from too many concurrent players in the same places at the same time.

What’s fascinating is that Final Fantasy XI first launched in Japan in 2002, and 24 years later, it’s more popular than ever. Many people even prefer it to Square Enix’s newer and more popular Final Fantasy XIV.

Square Enix hasn’t provided a date for when Odin will reopen, if ever. The earlier restrictions on the two most popular servers still being in place mean that the overall server load hasn’t meaningfully decreased, so if you want to play Final Fantasy XI with your friends from Odin, you’d better create a character there before March 10.

Though both Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV are notable for just the mere act of registration being the first hurdle, as PlayOnline and Mog Station are not the most intuitive websites.
