A dive off the Norfolk coast turned into one of Britain’s biggest maritime discoveries when archaeologists revealed the wreck of HMS Gloucester. The warship was a 17th-century Royal Navy vessel that sank in 1682 while carrying James Stuart, Duke of York, the future King James II of England. According to the BBC , the wreck’s public announcement was made in 2022 after years of careful archaeological work since its discovery in 2007 by brothers Julian and Lincoln Barnwell and former Royal Navy submariner James Little. UEA and the Gloucester 1682 Trust described the find as a significant maritime discovery that offers insights into 17th-century naval life, politics and trade.
