In 2017, 75-year-old Jeanne Socrates suffered major injuries after falling from a ladder while preparing to sail around the world; two years later she finished the voyage alone at 77 and set a world record

In 2017, British sailor Jeanne Socrates was 75 when a fall from a ladder while working on her yacht left her with serious injuries and forced her to postpone another attempt to sail around the world. Instead of giving up, she returned to the challenge a year later. On October 3, 2018, she set out from Victoria, Canada, aboard her 38-foot yacht Nereida. After spending 320 days at sea, she returned to Victoria on September 7, 2019, at the age of 77, completing the journey alone, without outside assistance and without stopping. Guinness World Records officially recognises Socrates as the oldest female to sail around the world solo and non-stop, at 77 years and 21 days.
