After more than a decade of negotiations, setbacks and patience, the world reached a landmark agreement to protect one of Earth's last untouched marine ecosystems. In 2016, member nations of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) unanimously approved the creation of the world's largest marine protected area in Antarctica's Ross Sea, as per a report by the California Academy of Sciences.
