In 2015, New Jersey pumped 30,000 cubic yards of dredged mud into a breach splitting Mordecai Island; the project rejoined the island and rebuilt nesting habitat

For a hundred years, wave by wave, Mordecai Island was slowly splitting in two. The barrier island off New Jersey's Barnegat Bay had been eroding bit by bit for decades.
