Kent Park Lake restoration was never going to be a quick fix. The Iowa lake had spent years collecting sediment and excess nutrients from its watershed. Those problems affected water clarity, algae levels and the lake’s overall condition. Community partners started addressing the problems in 2004, beginning a restoration effort that would span two decades.
The payoff came in 2024, when Kent Park Lake met Iowa’s water-quality standards. The lake was then removed from the state’s impaired-waters list. That change marked an important milestone for a popular recreation area in Johnson County. It also showed how sustained work across an entire watershed can gradually change a struggling lake.
