In 1953, a concrete barrier blocked fish migration in Massachusetts. 70 years later, it’s finally being removed to bring the native trout back

A concrete barrier that has blocked fish migration in Fresh Brook, Wellfleet, Massachusetts, for more than 70 years is set to be removed as part of a major restoration project. The Fresh Brook Restoration Project aims to restore the stream’s natural flow, reconnect it with tidal waters and create conditions for sea-run brook trout to return to their historic spawning grounds.

The project, led by Cape Cod National Seashore with support from several conservation partners, is expected to move into construction in fall or winter 2026. Permitting and environmental and cultural resource reviews are expected to be completed by summer 2026.
