In 1878, Adeline Hornbek arrived in Colorado and built a homestead of her own. She was a single mother at a time when life on the frontier demanded hard work, practical skills and steady determination. Her first home was modest, but it became the starting point for something much larger.
By 1885, Hornbek had established a substantial ranch. That growth was striking because many people living nearby were still practising subsistence farming. Their farms were largely built around meeting their own needs, while Hornbek’s property had developed into a more established operation.
