In 1875, a one-room schoolhouse taught generations of American children; 151 years later, it was donated to a nonprofit as a new restoration fight begins

A historic one-room schoolhouse built in 1875 is entering a new chapter in Delaware County, Indiana, after surviving closure, storm damage, neglect and an earlier rescue from possible demolition. Schoolhouse No. 3, also known as the ‘Corinth schoolhouse,’ once served rural children before closing after the 1912–13 school year. More than a century later, the building has again begun to show the effects of age, prompting a newly formed nonprofit to step in. In August 2026, the family of the late ‘Dr Norman and Hermie Miller’ officially donated the property to One Room Schoolhouse No. 3, Inc.(a non-profit organization in Muncie, Indiana, formed to preserve and restore the historic 1875 Corinth Schoolhouse), giving the organisation responsibility for its future. Now, 151 years after the schoolhouse was built, another fight to protect this small but remarkable piece of local history is underway.
