Around £177.6 million was lost to impersonation scams in 2022 with more than 45,000 fraud cases reported. That is according to UK Finance, the industry trade body that leads the Take Five campaign, highlighting the dangers of fraud.
It says there were a total of 45,367 frauds reported last year. The figures have been released during Take Five Week, April 17 to April 21.
These impersonation scams take place when a criminal contacts someone while posing as a trusted organisation, such as the bank, police, a delivery or utility company, or even a friend or family member. Scams often start with a call, text, email or direct message with an urgent request for money or personal and financial information.
