Imelda May has deleted a Tweet that voiced her support for her “kind friend”, actor Johnny Depp, after it received backlash on social media.
The Irish singer’s original post, which is still available via Instagram, showed unequivocal support for the Hollywood actor, who is currently suing his ex-wife Amber Heard over claims that he physically abused her during their marriage.
May uploaded a black and white photo of herself and the actor together on stage in an undisclosed location, accompanied by the following caption: “Johnny is the kindest, coolest, most thoughtful, considerate, respectful, truthful, heartful humans you could ever know.”

However, many Twitter users criticised her loyalty to the Hollywood star, which led to her deleting the post.
“I surprise myself with my continuous naivety of the viciousness of Twitter,” May later tweeted.
The origins of the 47-year-old singer’s friendship with Depp remain unclear. They both performed at a birthday bash for singer Shane MacGowan in Dublin in 2018.
Depp has spoken of his appreciation for McGowan’s music in the past and once described him as “one of the most important poets of the 20th century.”
Imelda’s most recent Tweet explains that she deleted her original post due to the negative reaction it received, adding that the case has brought out “strong emotions” in the general public.
Depp is suing Heard for an opinion piece she wrote for the Washington Post in which she described being subject to physical violence by a powerful figure.
Although Heard did not refer to the Pirates of the Caribbean star by name, Depp’s lawyers say that the piece alluded to Depp and cost him acting gigs.
Depp parted ways from film productions such as “Fantastic Beasts 3” following the allegations in 2018.
Additionally, Heard is counter suing Depp for $100 million worth of damages on the grounds that she was subject to violence at his hands.
Each party denies the other’s claims.
The ongoing defamation trial is entering its final week of proceedings.
