Imelda May organising her own Irish premiere of Fisherman's Friends 2 in Dublin so her dad can see her acting debut

Imelda May has revealed her father won’t be able to make it to the UK premiere of her movie, Fisherman’s Friends 2 – so she’s flying back to Dublin to have a party with him instead.

The singer will walk the red carpet next week in Cornwall for the premiere to the sequel to 2019 UK comedy flick Fisherman's Friends.

But the Dubliner revealed her father, Tony Clabby, will not be able to travel to see her.

She has instead organised her own Irish premiere in her local cinema on August 19, the same day the movie comes out in cinemas.

She revealed on ITV’s This Morning: “August 19 it’s out all over the place and we are doing the premiere next week in Cornwall and my dad can’t go to it so I’m going to have a premiere myself in Ireland on August 19 in Dublin. I think we’re just going to go to the local cinema in ball gowns and tuxedos.”

The original film describes the true story of a group of Cornish fishermen who formed a sea shanty group, The Fisherman's Friends, and eventually signed to Universal Records and achieved worldwide fame.

The Cornish fishermen achieved a top 10 hit with their debut album of traditional sea shanty songs.

Imelda will portray the role of Aubrey Flynn, joining Daniels Mays, James Purefoy, Maggie Steed and others in the film.

The 48-year-old said she was a fan of the first movie.

“I thought it was great but this movie, I’m not going to say is even better because the last one was fab, but it is a perfect progression.

“It’s kind of like second album syndrome. You put out an album and then the second one has to be like magic. I think this movie does that.

“It’s feel good but it is also full of heart.”

Opening up about her acting debut, she thanked the producers for “taking a chance on me”.

“I auditioned and got through the audition and they really took a chance on me and James Purefoy, just minding me and he really guided me when I needed it and Maggie Steele. It was such a good vibe,” she added.

The band are set for further success as Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical will tour the UK from September before branching out to Canada, the US and Australia.

Fisherman’s Friends have previously performed at The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and Glastonbury festival. They were also awarded the good tradition award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2011.
