Imelda May is “excited and terrified” to star in a play based on a book by Brendan Behan.
The singer will star in the one-woman play at Dublin 3Olympia in August, which will be directed by Peter Sheridan – brother of film producer Jim. The play is based on a book by the late Brendan Behan, about his “inspirational” mother, Kathleen.
Imelda, 48, posted on Facebook that she was looking forward to the opportunity. The Dubliner wrote: “An entire one-woman play is certainly jumping in the deep end for my first theatre show but I rarely do things by halves.
The life of Kathleen Behan, Brendan’s Mammy, is so enthralling I just had to do it. And the opportunity to work with the amazing Peter Sheridan in this new production is such a wonderful way to tell her story.”

Imelda added: “Join me for an evening of songs and stories celebrating her life to mark the centenary of the birth of Brendan.” Brendan Behan was one of Ireland’s most notorious writers – and even spent time in jail. The playwright famously described himself as “a drinker with writing problems”.
He died aged 41 at Dublin’s Meath Hospital in 1964, and would have been 100 years old this year.
