A young woman stabbed her boyfriend through the wrist during a volatile argument in a Carrington hotel room, completely severing his nerves and leaving him worried that he would "bleed out".
Alyssa Richardson, 22, on Wednesday admitted attacking her 23-year-old partner during the incident at the Young Street Hotel on January 16.
The pair had been in a relationship for about three years and had been living at the hotel for two months when they returned home from grocery shopping about 11am.
According to an agreed statement of facts, a heated argument about money quickly turned violent, with Richardson repeatedly punching her boyfriend in the face and scratching him beneath his right eye.
"I'm going to kill you, I'm going to kill you," Richardson said.
Richardson's partner hit her back to get her to stop and pushed her away, but she grabbed a knife and told him to leave the room.
"I'm going to kill you if you do not leave me alone and leave this room," Richardson said, pointing the knife at her boyfriend.
The victim was reaching out to grab his mobile phone and some cash when Richardson stabbed him in the wrist with the blade, causing a deep 10-centimetre wound.
The victim started to bleed profusely and called out for help.
Worried he was going to bleed out, the victim fled the room and ran downstairs to the hotel where staff and patrons used towels to stem the bleeding.
Richardson walked downstairs and waited for police to arrive and arrest her.
She made some admissions to police, but denied intentionally causing any injury to the victim.
Meanwhile, her boyfriend was taken to John Hunter Hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries, including a complete severance of nerves, an artery, muscles and tendons in his wrist.
Richardson was initially refused bail, despite claiming she had been the victim of domestic violence at the hands of her boyfriend.
She was later granted bail and appeared in court this week and pleaded guilty to reckless wounding and common assault after prosecutors dropped a more serious stabbing charge.
She will appear in Newcastle District Court next month to get a sentence date.
