Illan Meslier opens up on his Leeds United regret following relegation

Leeds United's Illan Meslier has spoken of his disappointment following the side's relegation from the Premier League. The Whites went down on the final day of last season, with a limp defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur ending any chance of a great escape.

It brought to an end a three-year stay in the top flight. Meslier only missed seven league games since promotion and so understandably feels the pain more than most.

Speaking to RMC Sport, the 23-year-old was asked to give his thoughts after the club were consigned to the Championship: "We are disappointed. Going down to the Championship... there is a feeling of regret, of disappointment.

"Unfortunately, it's the law of sport. Personally, there are good things, not so good. We can't go back, but we necessarily think about what happened because normally, we can't get into this kind of situation."

The French youth international, who is currently on International duty with France's under-21s, says his full focus is now on having a strong tournament out in Romania and Georgia.

France are grouped in with Norway, Switzerland and Italy with their first game against the latter on June 22.

He added: "We played our last match on May 28, we had ten days to break. It was necessary, psychologically too. I arrive here with a clear head, with clear ideas to bring all my qualities to the France team.

"I'm very happy to come here, especially for a big event, the European Championship. We have been working for more than a year to get to this moment."
