Iker Casillas appeared to become the latest high-profile footballing figure to come out as gay in a social media update on Sunday. But his tweet has since been deleted with Spanish media speculating he and his former Spain teammate Carles Puyol were kidding around.
The ex- Real Madrid goalkeeper was married to Sara Carbonero until March 2021 and they had two children together during their five year relationship. He tweeted: "Espero que me respeten: soy gay. #felizdomingo" which translates to "I hope you respect me: I'm gay. #felizdomingo". Tens of thousands of fans jumped onto the 41-year-old's post with supportive messages with his former Spain team mate Puyol commenting saying, "Es el momento de contar lo nuestro, Iker" meaning "It's time to tell our story, Iker."
During his illustrious career Casillas won a World Cup, two European Championships as well as five Champions League trophies and three Champions Leagues and was widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers of his generation.
Zander Murray became the first current Scottish professional player to open up about his sexuality last month wit the Gala Fairydean Rovers forward insisting he "wants to help others who are struggling" as he opened up about how coming out was such a big weight off his shoulders.
