IKEA issues urgent recall of popular product from Irish stores over safety fears

IKEA is recalling one of its food products sold in Irish stores over safety concerns.

The Swedish retailer is taking a batch of its HUVUDROLL Vegetable Balls off shelves due to the possible presence of plastic pieces.

Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in IKEA stores supplied with the implicated batch.

The frozen vegetable balls have a pack size of 1000g with a best before date of October 26, 2022.

The alert was issued by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland on Thursday.

There are five IKEA stores across the island of Ireland - in Ballymun, Dublin; an order and collection point in Carrickmines, Dublin; two smaller stores dedicated to room planning in Naas and Stephen's Green, as well as another main store in Belfast.

It comes after several alerts were already issued by the FSAI so far in February.

Certain batches of 11 different rice products were urgently recalled from SuperValu and Centra stores across Ireland last week.

The specific batches are being urgently taken off shelves "due to the possible presence of insects".

Among the affected items are long grain, basmati, brown and wholegrain rice.

Aldi is also recalling its Roosters Gluten Free Breaded Chicken Fillet Goujons due to the possible presence of salmonella.

The affected products have a pack size of 400g, the batch code 211216, 16:00:00, 16.12.2021, and best before date of December 16, 2022.

Symptoms caused by salmonella can develop anytime between six and 72 hours after an affected product has been consumed.

The most common symptom is diarrhoea, while other signs may include fever, headache and abdominal cramps.

Meanwhile, Desperados also warned that its Original Beer flavoured with Tequila could be unsafe for some consumers.

The company said that while the outer packaging of the product is labelled correctly, the individual bottles are not in English.

As the beer contains barley, it could be "unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of cereals containing gluten".

The six-back of Desperados beers are the only products subject to the allergen alert and the other pack sizes are not impacted.
