Iga Swiatek Advances To Semifinals After Danielle Collins Retires

Iga Świątek

Iga Swiatek, the four-time Roland-Garros champion, has advanced to the women’s singles semifinal following Danielle Collins' retirement during the third set of their quarterfinal match.

Swiatek dominated the first set with a score of 6-1 but faced a setback in the second set, losing 6-2 to Collins. However, Swiatek regained control in the third set and was leading 4-1 when Collins decided to retire. Collins had taken a medical timeout after losing the initial three games of the third set before briefly returning to play two more games.

In the upcoming semifinal, Swiatek is set to face China’s Zheng Qinwen, who secured her spot by defeating Angelique Kerber earlier in the day. Zheng's victory over Kerber marked the end of the latter's campaign in the tournament.

Swiatek holds a dominant record against Zheng, having emerged victorious in all six of their previous encounters. Their most recent clash took place in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships back in February.
