Marathon update 1.0.5 is rolling out on all platforms today, and with it Bungie has officially added the Cryo Archive map to the game. Described as a raid-like encounter, Cryo Archive immediately turned heads among the Destiny 2 community, which is accustomed to grinding raids for prestige loot. In classic Bungie fashion, Marathon players have yet to figure out how to access Cryo Archive, which is still listed as redacted in-game, but Bungie has at least shared some exclusive loot to daydream about. "Cryo Archive has been added to the game. Good luck getting there," Bungie says at the very end of today's patch notes.
The very beginning of the notes, however, hold details on some Cryo Archive treasures. Three "new random-rolled" implants, and three exclusive weapon mods, have been revealed. These can only be found in Cryo Archive, and they sound mighty powerful – and very similar to several Destiny 2 items. Here's the full list:
- Covert Recovery implant: "While in smoke, your self-repair speed is increased and you use healing consumables faster."
- Freeloader implant: "Defeating an enemy with a knife attack grants a small amount of tactical and prime ability energy."
- Panic Response implant: "While at low health, using a healing consumable grants the effects of Cardio Kick for a short duration."
- Punishment mod: "This weapon deals significantly increased damage against [REDACTED] combatants."
- Testament mod: "Aiming down sights for a short duration increases this weapon's range and aim assist by a massive amount."
- Hurricane mode: "While airborne, this weapon has increased stability and greatly reduced accuracy penalties."
The Punishment mod, which deals bonus damage to enemies of a certain race or faction (specifically, a race believed to be a modern integration of the original Marathon lore), is the loudest Destiny throwback. Going back to the anti-Taken days, Bungie's encouraged players to specialize against specific Destiny factions.
Hurricane, which echoes the mid-air benefits of aerial Destiny 2 weapon mods, also rings a bell. In a game with a fast and agile sandbox like Marathon, especially one so ambush-heavy, this sort of flexibility could be powerful.
We can safely assume that there's plenty of hidden loot still waiting in Cryo Archive – perhaps even an analog to boss chests or Destiny's raid Exotics, which packed unique and potent properties into oddball weaponry. For now, we've got to figure out how to get into the dang thing.
