Everton youngster Halid Djankpata is out to become a regular for Paul Tait’s under-21 side after signing his first professional contract with the club.
Djankpata has impressed for Leighton Baines’ under-18s over the last two seasons, making 33 appearances in all competitions and scoring twice. That impressive form led to a call-up to Tait’s U21 side towards the end of the campaign.
After coming off the bench against West Ham United at the end of August, the 18-year-old, who joined Everton’s academy at the age of 14, then made his first start in Premier League 2 against Liverpool in April.
Djankpata’s development suffered a setback in 2021 when he injured his medial collateral ligament, resulting in a five-month spell on the sidelines. However, the versatile attacking midfielder bounced back strongly, and after putting pen to paper on his two-year deal, he expressed his appreciation for the roles both Baines and Tait have played in his progression.

Speaking evertontv, the teenager said: "I’m buzzing to sign my first professional contract at a lovely club. I’ve been here for five years, and I can’t wait to get going for the new season.
"It’s been amazing. My whole time here, I have grown up as a person. My emotions have matured, and I’m just so excited to keep pushing forward.
"Last season was a positive one because it’s very good to captain your team, and we won games. Working with Leighton Baines is very enjoyable and easy because he can relate to you a lot as he just finished his career not too long ago.
"Paul Tait is an amazing coach, as well. He tells you a lot. You can take it all in because of the way he speaks to you."
Asked about his ambitions for the forthcoming campaign, Djankpata revealed: "I am aiming to start for the under-21s in most games [next season].
"I would also really like to train with the men’s senior team with a view to making my debut in the future. If I get the chance, I don’t think I will waste any time and will look to grab it as soon as I can."
