Idris Elba was snapped while in character during the shooting of the upcoming film Luther, in which he plays the eponymous leading role.
The psychological crime thriller film is based on the BBC series of the same name, which focuses on dedicated detective chief inspector John Luther and the crimes he works to solve.
Filming took place earlier in the year, with the series’ London set being swapped for a new shooting location. The film is due to be released in early 2023 on Netflix.
Photos of Idris, which had been obtained by Empire Magazine, showed the 50-year-old actor in a longline tweed ensemble, which is his character’s signature coat in the series.
He was pictured against a snowy backdrop, as he made his way through a mountainous landscape, with the film’s location yet to be disclosed.
Speaking to Empire about how the franchise made the move from television to film, Idris said: “It's really dangerous when expanding from television to film to throw a lot of money at it, and for that moment to change the characteristics of the show.
“I wanted to make sure that even though we had a bigger budget, we didn’t distort the parameters of Luther-land too much.”
On the new set, Idris did confirm that the new film has left London, explaining: “We break out of the gritty streets of London, we take it outside of that a little bit.”
Alongside starring in the film, Idris serves as a producer. He is joined by castmates Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo, with Jamie Payne directing the film, which was written by Neil Cross.
The TV show’s first series was aired in 2010 and ran for five seasons, ending in 2019.
It comes after Idris shared that he wrapped up filming for the film earlier this year, telling LADbible : “The Luther film, guess what, we have finished it and we have some finishing work to do on the movie but it's nearly there. We're really proud of it.”
Speaking on the franchise as a whole, he said that they would be opening doors and widening it up to possibilities.
