Icelandic voters have shut the door, at least for now, on restarting talks to join the European Union. Certified figures released by national broadcaster RÚV show 118,040 ballots, 52.8 percent, landed in the "No" column, against 105,399, or 47.2 percent, for "Yes." Out of 225,031 total votes cast, turnout reached 82.5 percent, the strongest showing for any Icelandic referendum since the 1944 vote that created the republic, and the highest participation in any national vote, including parliamentary elections, since 2009.
