Iceland is closing four more stores this month - check if your local is shutting

Iceland is set to close a handful of its supermarket sites before the end of the month.

A few Iceland stores have closed over the last few weeks with the next set to shut its doors for good on March 14.

The Iceland store at the White Rose Centre in Rhyl will cease trading from tomorrow with the frozen food chain blaming the closure on a "continuous decline in business at the store".

The stores which closed at the end of February were Iceland's Mill Lane, Bromsgrove site and its Chineham Shopping Centre store in Basingstoke.

There has been no confirmation by the frozen food supermarket as to why these sites had to close.

Before the end of March, the following Iceland sites will close:

  • White Rose Centre, Rhyl - March 14

  • South Street, Newport, Isle of Wight - March 25
  • St Catherine’s Place, Bedminster, Bristol - March 25
  • Deiniol Centre, Bangor - March 27

The reason behind the Isle of Wight store closure is reportedly down to an increase in rent and dwindling in-store sales.

In Bristol, the frozen food specialist was one of two stores left in the shopping centre, which is earmarked for a major redevelopment as part of the Bedminster Green regeneration project.

The move leaves just Farm Foods once Iceland closes.

When the Bangor Iceland site closure happens, residents won't be left high and dry as a new Food Warehouse, which is part of the Iceland group, will open in the city the following day.

An Iceland spokesman told North Wales Live: "The Bangor store will close on Monday 27th March and The Food Warehouse will open on Tuesday 28th March."

“We want to thank all that have chosen Iceland for their weekly shops and daily essentials over the years.”

The Food Warehouse is a sub-brand of the parent company Iceland Foods.

Founded in 2014, The Food Warehouse was created to be Iceland's "big brother" and be a large bulk-buying destination for shoppers.

Iceland describes The Food Warehouse as a "concept store" and currently has around 150 stores nationwide.

Iceland has around 800 stores in comparison so overall the chain has around 1,000 stores under these brands.

The Food Warehouse website says that it offers customers and local businesses "a simpler way to shop for great value and great quality products".

With wider and fewer aisles, in order to make shopping "less stressful" the supermarkets offer bigger pack options on well-known brands such as Greggs, TGI's and Slimming World.

On the closures, Iceland says it is currently trading "very strongly" and over the last financial year it has opened 24 new stores in the UK, and "typically" it opens around 20 new stores each year.

With a portfolio as big as theirs, Iceland says it is "natural" that some stores will close or be moved.

An Iceland spokesperson said: "Across Iceland and The Food Warehouse we have a portfolio of over UK 1,000 stores, and our retail estate has grown by nearly 200 stores over the last ten years.

"We typically open more than 20 new stores each year, creating many new jobs and contributing to the growth of local economies.

"At the same time, we continually review the retail experience offered to our customers and have always made a small number of store closures every year, as local shopping patterns change and shop leases expire. The business is currently trading very strongly, achieving record market shares."
