A quick-thinking ice-cream van driver brought relief to motorists stuck on the M62 by selling 99s and lollies during a traffic jam.
A seven-mile tailback became an unlikely business opportunity for the business owner, although it is not clear whether they deliberately sent the van out to the motorway, or if it was already caught in the traffic when the driver decided to cash in on the captive audience.
Delighted drivers took to social media to share images of their cooling refreshments in the hot weather, with some showing a large number of customers leaving their vehicles to join the queue for ice-creams.
A group of customers can be seen waiting to get their 99', with a few more people further up the motorway just stretching their legs after traffic was brought to a complete standstill.
One image was posted by Krissiy Sutcliffe, with the caption: "Only in Yorkshire..7 mile tailback on the M62 so what do you do? Sell your ice-cream on a hot day.
"Could only happen in Yorkshire, that’s why we love Yorkshire."
The Daily Star reports that traffic had been brought to a halt on the M62 Eastbound on Sunday, June 19, following an accident.
At 12.10pm drivers reported congestion was building up on the motorway between junction 26 for the M606 at Chain Bar and junction 25 at Brighouse. At 12.34pm drivers remained at a standstill.
The incident left some drivers opening their car doors to cool off as temperatures soared up to 23C.
Several envious social media users said they wished they had seen an ice-cream van while they were stuck in motorway traffic.
John Cheshire wrote “I've been stuck here many times, the M62 is the Motorway between Lancashire and Yorkshire (and intense driving). I never had the luck of an ice cream van though!”
Janet Oldfield added: “We travel on M62 all the time. We live about 15 miles from our daughter in Leeds. It's always like this. I will be constantly looking for an ice cream van now.”
