Immigration and Customs Enforcement has banned deportation officers from wearing jeans, hoodies, sweatshirts and other casual clothing during field operations, following a botched arrest at a Las Vegas airport that raised questions about public identification of federal agents. The new dress rules require officers to wear recognisable ICE clothing during enforcement operations.
The change came after two plainclothes ICE officers attempted to arrest a man at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas on 13 July. A video showed the officers wearing hooded sweatshirts, with one wearing a face covering. The encounter drew attention after onlookers confronted the agents, who eventually left the man partially handcuffed on the ground.
