Robin van Persie has waxed lyrical over his visit to Ibrox in the Rangers vs World Legends charity match last week - thanking Scotland for 'a warm welcome'.
Van Persie, alongside other world heroes such as Luis Figo, Jack Wilshere, Michael Essien and Steve McManaman all took to Ibrox in a foreign lineup, against Rangers’ best ever players including Kris Boyd, Pedro Mendes, Jermain Defoe and Barry Ferguson. Diehard Gers fans will have been disappointed at a 4-3 loss on their own turf, but many will have enjoyed the day out to quench the thirst at club level that was brought on by the international break.
Van Persie equalised after Defoe’s opener which wowed the Govan crowd, and his assist brought out the best of Wilshere who rolled back the years of Arsene Wenger with a well-taken goal. The Dutchman then scored the winner to cap off a fine return to the pitch after retiring in 2019 - in which he thanked Rangers, Ibrox and Scotland for allowing him the opportunity to return to what he did best - scoring goals.
He said: "About last weekend…it was good fun to play alongside so many great players in the Rangers Legends vs World Legends game at Ibrox. Thanks for the warm welcome, Scotland."
And former Gunners teammate Wilshere joined in on the act, naming Ibrox as a ground that you can 'feel the history' in after his goal. The England icon added: “I loved it, every minute. It's the first time I've been here you and can feel the history when you walk in.
"They kept the ball really well and made it difficult for us. (Van Persie has) still got it. He looks fitter than his playing days."
