Ianis Hagi’s Rangers exit could correct Gheorghe 'missed opportunity' as legendary dad names transfer regret

Gheoghe Hagi reckons his son Ianis could make the grade in England when he leaves Rangers as he opened up on his own Premier League transfer regrets.

Hagi Jr is working his way back to full fitness after overcoming a nightmare 13 month absence from first team action with Rangers after a serious knee injury hampered his Ibrox progress. Since he returned to action last month as a sub in a league win against St Johnstone, he has made just one start in the Scottish Cup victory over Partick Thistle but has been working his way back to top form with cameos off the Light Blues' bench.

Legendary dad Gheorghe, who made his name with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Galatasaray, reckons that the 24-year-old could make the grade wherever he moves after his Scottish Premiership stint - pinpointed the English Premier League as a potential next step. Having had two shots at playing in England's top flight, the Farul Constanta boss admits he would love to see his son capitalise on any potential opportunity.

Speaking to the BBC about his son, Hagi Sr said: "A good player can go out and do his job anywhere. The league doesn't matter.

"Ianis won the award for Rangers' best young player before his knee ligament injury (in January 2022), so he adapted fairly well. Bad luck with his injury. But if I never got to play in England, maybe he will - why not?

"I had two opportunities to play in the Premier League and I'm sorry I finally missed both. It's a country I like and respect. I'm sure fans would have enjoyed my style."
