Ian Wright makes X-rated Liverpool point about Man City and the Premier League

Ian Wright has a shared a forthright view on the competitiveness of the Premier League - and he's just thankful that Liverpool are in it.

Manchester City have won four of the last five top-flight titles with Jurgen Klopp's side puncturing the streak with the Reds' first league success in 30 years in 2020. On two other occasions, Liverpool have finished one point behind Pep Guardiola's side. missing out on the title both times on the last day of the season.

But former Arsenal and England star Wright has insisted that despite City's dominance of the past five years, without the Reds, the Premier League could be nothing more than a procession.

Speaking bluntly in a Q&A session for OTB Sports, he said: "If you look at Liverpool - I thought Fulham were amazing on the first day against Liverpool. They put the pressure on Liverpool and the reason they did that is because you that Liverpool, who have chased down a Man City side that are imperious - if it wasn't for Liverpool this ****ing league would be s***.

"Simply because they (City) have beat them on two occasions by one point. And they (Liverpool in another season) hammered them out of sight. If it wasn't for Liverpool it would be a procession."

The phenomenal consistency of City under Guardiola means the Reds have to deliver a near-perfect season every time just to keep pace. As such, Liverpool got their latest campaign off to a slow start by drawing their first two matches against Fulham and Crystal Palace, while City racked up two straight wins.

But frustrated supporters will have been given a boost after the defending champions dropped two points against Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon, offering Liverpool the opportunity to regain early ground when they face arch rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday evening.
