Ian Wright delivers Todd Boehly's £300m transfer plan verdict amid Man City and Liverpool threat

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright believes Chelsea and their new owner Todd Boehly will have to spend 'more' if they are to close the gap this season at the top of the Premier League to both Man City and Liverpool.

On the pitch, the Blues kicked off the campaign with the all vital three points as they ended their five year wait for a win at Goodison Park. Jorginho's penalty late into injury time was enough to see Thomas Tuchel's side get over the line. All of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella made their debuts for the current World Champions in the Premier League on Saturday. The trio all played their part successfully in contributing to a solid and professional team performance.

The former two of the trio drew more plaudits due to the increased time they had on the pitch in this first Premier League fixture of 2022/23 but Cucurella is sure to get more time once he acclimatises to Tuchel's way of thinking and methods. Around £163m so far has been spent on new first-team recruits this summer by Boehly and Clearlake but this isn't to stop anytime soon if the latest reports are to be believed. Another £150m plus has been forecasted if the west Londoners are to be successful in negotiations for Wesley Fofana, Frenkie de Jong and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but do the new owners need to go as excessive as they are doing in their first summer in charge?

Wright believes so. Despite waxing lyrical on the business Chelsea have done so far, he believes that more money needs to be spent to ensure that Man City and Liverpool take real notice of what is being built behind them.

"Well I think they are going to have to, especially when you look at what City are doing and how strong Liverpool are," he told BBC Match of the Day when asked about the big spending and whether it needs to continue. "I think they are going to have to spend more.

"The signing of Sterling is a fantastic signing. Cucurella may have cost more than they would have wanted to spend but he's somebody that was sought after by City. I think he's a quality player.

"Chukwuemeka is one for the future. Koulibaly will come in and do his job but they are going to need to spend more Chelsea, without a doubt."
