Arsenal legend Ian Wright has hit out at Tottenham’s tactical approach during their 1-0 loss at home to Brighton on Saturday. Spurs failed to muster a single shot on target in an underwhelming display and were punished in the 90th minute by Leandro Trossard's classy and composed finish.
The defeat is an undoubted blow to Spurs’ hopes of securing a top four finish, however, they remain fourth after Arsenal lost to Southampton. But following Manchester United's victory over Norwich they now only trail Antonio Conte’s side by three points.
The Lilywhites were in scintillating form going into the game having won their last four matches in a row; scoring an impressive 14 goals in the process. And given the nature of their previous results Wright was left surprised by their toothless display against Brighton and criticised the tactics employed by Conte.

“I can’t understand the tactics today, they played like an away side," he told Premier League Productions. "They weren’t passing through the lines, Harry Kane wasn’t coming short, they weren’t pressing Brighton high to win the ball in the last third, to win the ball in those high areas to then attack them and it was very confusing when you consider what they’ve done leading into this game. But Brighton showed that little bit of class in the end and they won the game.”
Spurs will be keen to bounce back in their next game but face a tricky trip to in-form Brentford next Saturday evening. The Bees have won five out of their last seven league matches, thanks in no small part to the form of former Spurs man Christian Eriksen, and a top 10 finish is very much within the sights of Thomas Frank’s side.
