Ian Wright blasts 'frustrating' Leeds United defending on Match of The Day despite referee error

Match of The Day pundit Ian Wright claims Leeds United got the basics wrong against Tottenham as they threw away the lead on three occasions. The former Crystal Palace and Arsenal striker felt that the Whites were unlucky in Spurs' opening goal with Illan Meslier fouled in the build-up.

However, he admits that Leeds could have seen Rodrigo's second goal chalked off, which balanced out the decisions. Wright said: "It was the basics. It was naivety. Just poor play but I think he's right about this one when you look at it.

"It's a foul on the goalkeeper and I can't understand how - he's straight into his chest and there's no way the goalkeeper is going to get good hands on it. They've been unlucky with that one, but there was a foul on Bentancur for the Rodrigo goal which Spurs fans say they should have got so it evens itself out.

"This is just poor play [in the build-up to Ben Davies' goal]. You look at Roca here, Kulusevski who was brilliant today, the challenge from the defender is poor, Harry Kane in too much space and you've got to be tighter with him, even though he doesn't score. Here, look how much time and space he's [Davies] got, he can take a touch, he can play it to anyone.

"There's no one picking him up and they score the goal. You look at Bentancur, Aaronson, Adams there, I think Adams has got to be more aware of Bentancur here [Spurs' third goal]. When this ball comes out to him, he's trying to get across and it's too late.

"You've got to see that. You score three goals away from home and you've got to be tighter. Look at this [in the build-up to the winner] one-two - easy.

"Kulusevski - look at Cooper, Koch coming across, this is a poor challenge he's got to hold him up. He's walked past him.

"Cooper should be getting back he's not even busting a gut to get back to Bentancur. He just slips it in. For me, when you're looking at Leeds they've lead at Palace, Fulham and today and they've dropped 11 points from winning positions.

"It must be very frustrating for Jesse Marsch."
