Ian Poulter drops LIV Golf expansion hint after Greg Norman "long list" claim

Ian Poulter has dropped a huge hint that LIV Golf could well be set to expand their playing roster, just weeks after CEO Greg Norman revealed he had a 'long list' of players wanting to join the breakaway league.

Since forming last summer, LIV has lured in a whole host of big names from across professional golf, including the likes of Poulter, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka. As things stand, there is only room for 48 LIV players at each event, with those divided into 12 teams of four.

There have been calls for LIV Golf to expand their playing roster further amid their current limited fields, and according to Poulter it seems there are future plans to do so.

Taking part in a Q&A session with his fans on Instagram, the European Ryder Cup star was asked whether he felt LIV would expand open to more players. In response, he revealed: "It has room for it if need be..."

After flurries in their maiden 2022 season, announcements of signings from LIV have been limited this year having cemented their current 48-man roster. Who will be the next star to make the controversial move remains to be seen, but if Norman's comments are anything to go by then they could be a number of stellar players waiting in the wings.

Discussing an expansion, the former world No. 1 and LIV CEO told NCA NewsWire: “It’s an ongoing process. We’ve got a long list of players who want to come in. We just don’t have the ability today because players are under contract.

"But we’ll get to a position where there will be a relegation series and places will start opening up... It’s incredible the amount of players who want to come on board. It would surprise you how good those names are.” The future of professional golf remains up in the air, with the feud between LIV and the PGA Tour showing no signs of ending.

Amid the hostilities, Norman believes it could well be time for the two feuding tours to sit down and settle their differences. He told the Daily Telegraph: "Yeah, maybe we should sit down and talk. It’s going to happen somehow and somewhere down the line. And why shouldn't it be sooner rather than later?

"They must realise by now that we aren’t going away. We will continually keep going forwards... We have relegation and promotion in place and it’s all going to plan. I think we’ll soon have world ranking points at our events, because otherwise those rankings become obsolete."
