Ian Huntley lag 'killer' charged with murder after prison attack on Soham monster

Anthony Russell, 43, of HMP Frankland, has been charged with the murder of Soham killer Ian Huntley, Durham Constabulary said on Tuesday.

Huntley was reportedly attacked with an iron bar in the workshop of the maximum security prison on February 26 and suffered severe brain trauma.

The killer had been serving a life sentence for the murders of 10-year-old girls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002.

He was kept on life support in the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle following the attack before it was switched off at lunchtime on Friday and he was confirmed dead on Saturday.

Durham Constabulary said Russell will appear before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court via videolink on Wednesday afternoon over his alleged involvement in the attack.

In a statement, the force said: "A man has been charged with murder following an incident at HMP Frankland in Durham.

"Emergency services were called to reports of an assault in the workshop on the morning of Thursday February 26.

"Ian Huntley, 52, was taken to hospital with serious injuries but died on the morning of Saturday, March 7.

"Anthony Russell, 43, of HMP Frankland, has been charged with murder and will appear via video link at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court on Wednesday March 11."
