Ian Garry Tells Jon Jones To Avoid Tom Aspinall 'Like The Plague'

Unbeaten UFC welterweight contender Ian Garry has told Jon Jones to avoid Tom Aspinall ‘like the plague’. Garry, who features in the UFC 310 co-main event this weekend, believes Jones is the greatest MMA fighter of all time, but that he shouldn’t risk tarnishing his legacy.

Ian Garry Tells Jon Jones To Avoid Tom Aspinall

Ian Garry faces the toughest test of his MMA career this weekend, of that there is no doubt. The 15-0 unbeaten Irishman takes on Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310, in a welterweight clash that will determine who gets the next shot at the coveted UFC Welterweight Title.

Rakhmonov too is undefeated, and is the favourite with the best UFC betting sites in the UK heading into their UFC 310 co-main event clash. The focus this week has of course been on that fight and the Alexandre Pantoja vs Kai Asakura main event, but there have been some sub plots developing too.

One of them is the sparring rumours between Shavkat Rakhmonov and Ian Garry, with the Kazakh revealing that he submitted the Irishman in the gym and that Garry in fact tapped out.

Another narrative is the constant talk of a UFC Heavyweight Title clash between the champion Jon Jones, and the interim belt holder Tom Aspinall. Although neither man has anything to do with UFC 310 or indeed Ian Garry’s upcoming fight, the Irishman has weighed-in with his opinions on the proposed heavyweight clash.

Whilst discussing his upcoming fight at UFC 310 on talkSPORT, Machado Garry issued a warning to Jones, to avoid Aspinall at all cost if he can.

“Look, when you talk about the greatest of all time in MMA – it’s Jon Jones. What he has done inside that octagon has been nothing but phenomenal.

“I am a massive supporter of Tom Aspinall, and if I was Jon Jones, I would avoid that fight like the plague, because Tom is ridiculously talented,” Garry told talkSPORT.

‘I Would Avoid That Fight Like The Plague’ – Garry

Ian Garry has made it clear what he thinks of both Tom Aspinall and Jon Jones, but doesn’t necessarily want to see a fight between the pair.

Although Garry believes ‘Bones’ is the greatest MMA fighter of all time, he also thinks that a fight with Aspinall could potential tarnish his legacy, if he was to lose. For that reason, the Irishman feels Jones should avoid Aspinall ‘like the plague’.

“Everyone wants to see this fight, but is Jon Jones willing to put all of his reputation [on the line]. He’s an older fighter now. Is he wiling to do that against a young, hungry, dominant fighter. I don’t know.

“If he fights Tom Aspinall, what’s the benefit for him? Sure, if he beats Tom Aspinall, but if he losses does that tarnish his entire body of work?”, concluded Machado Garry.

UFC President Dana White has previously stated that the winner of the UFC 309 main event between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic should ‘absolutely’ face Aspinall. Given that it was Jones who defended his UFC Heavyweight Title, him versus the British MMA star seems like the only fight to make in the heavyweight division.

Both men remain in negotiations for that fight, but it could be some time until an official announcement is made. There might never be an announcement either, with Jones potentially defending his heavyweight belt against Alex Pereira instead.

Time will tell how the whole Jon Jones vs Tom Aspinall saga plays out in the coming weeks and months. But one thing is for sure, Ian Garry feels the champion should avoid the young, hungry, talented challenger ‘like the plague’.
