Ian Evatt's response when asked about Bolton Wanderers transfer links to QPR's Macauley Bonne

Ian Evatt would not been drawn on rumours linking Bolton Wanderers with transfer window interest in QPR striker Macauley Bonne but says the Whites are continuing to monitor the situation and improvments are being sought to his squad.

Wanderers have made four acquisitions so far this summer. Eoin Toal and Jack Iredale have joined on permanent deals from Derry City and Cambridge United.

Two players have also been brought in on loan for the campaign. Defender Conor Bradley has joined from Liverpool, while goalkeeper James Trafford has been signed up again from Manchester City.

More incomings are being sought and Wanderers have been linked with a loan move for Liverpool youngster Owen Beck. The left-back has been on loan at Famalicao in Portugal but could head to the University of Bolton Stadium for the rest of the campaign.

Yesterday afternoon, Sunday Mirror sports news editor Darren Witcoop suggested Wanderers were one of of few sides interested in QPR striker Bonne, with the Hoops keen to send the striker out to League One. Shrewsbury Town and Charlton Athletic were also named as potential destinations, but Ipswich Town when Bonne spent last season on loan are reported to be in pole position for his signature.

When asked about the transfer link, following the victory over Crewe Alex in the Papa Johns Trophy last night, Evatt was not drawn into speaking about Bonne. But he did say Wanderers will continue to monitor the situation in the transfer market and aim to improve.

He told the Manchester Evening News : “I’m not going to speak about other people’s players, but we’re constantly monitoring situations elsewhere and we’re always looking to improve.”

In Group B of the Northern section of the draw, Wanderers took the lead early on through Amadou Bakayoko. However, the Railwaymen drew level not long after through Courtney Baker-Richardson.

Bolton went ahead after the break thanks to Dion Charles, before Kieran Sadlier added a third with a classy finish. Charles added his second and Bolton's fourth before the end to ensure a 4-1 win.

Josh Sheehan made his long awaited comeback from a ruptured ACL which has kept him out of action since last November, while Eoin Toal made his debut following his summer transfer move from Derry City. Evatt feels Sheehan will be like another new signing for Bolton and said Toal's debut was among the highlights of the evening.

Hew said: “That’s like another new signing really. We saw his qualities tonight, his composure in possession, the way he picks passes, he’ll progress from that.

"That’s a big step forward from what he’s been doing and hopefully he’ll continue to do that.

“For me that was one of the highlights of tonight. I thought the way Eoin performed was really good considering he’s been thrown in the deep end a little bit because he hasn’t had too much work and also Will Aimson was outstanding again and I thought he was brilliant stepping in.”
