Weddings are meant to be once-in-a-lifetime events where the couple want to get every detail right so they remember it for the rest of their lives.
One important aspect of this is outfits. For the bride, this usually involves a fabulous new wedding gown in a style of their choosing. However, some people decide to opt for something more sentimental.
One woman couldn't wait to get married in her late mum's old wedding dress - but she has since had a lot of backlash from her family.
The 22-year-old took to Reddit to share her story, explaining that her mum had passed away two years ago from lung cancer. It was one of her mum's last wishes that she would wear her old wedding dress, and she promised she would.
However, when her relatives found out she would be wearing the dress they weren't happy, as her dad's side of the family "didn't support her career". The anonymous woman explained: "My dad's side of the family never liked my mum because she before she had me, [she] used to work in the exotic dancer industry and they all thought that she was using my dad for money, or something like that."
After learning learning what she was going to do, her family tried to talk her out of wearing the dress, but she ignored them.
In the recent forum post, she continued: "Now fast forward to my wedding when I was walking down that aisle I could feel all eyes on me, some people actually didn't care about the dress situation and were actually happy for me, while the rest were judgmental as f**k."
The next day she woke up to many hurtful messages from her friends and family, judging her for her choice of dress.
She has since cut ties with several family members, but she is "still getting backlash" a week later from many of them.
Since posting the story, fellow Redditors have commended the bride for wanting to honour her mum, and supported her in her decision to cut ties.
One person said: "It's lovely you wanted to honour your mother and have her with you in such an important and visible way. You are strong and kind and understanding and you got that from your mum!"
Another added: "You're doing the right thing! You need unconditional love and support. You should only be around people who have your best interest at heart."
