'I will be the boss' - Ajax defender Jurrien Timber looking for revenge on Liverpool striker

An Ajax defender is looking to do a number on Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez after the two sides were drawn together in the Champions League group stage.

The Reds have been placed into Group A alongside the Amsterdam club and will also face Napoli and Scottish Premier League giants Glasgow Rangers.

But Ajax centre-back Jurrien Timber does not have fond memories of new Liverpool forward Nunez. It was the Uruguayan's goal for Benfica that knocked the Dutch champions out of the competition last season at the Last 16 stage.

Considered something of an upset, that exit broke Ajax hearts, but having discovered this season's draw, Timber insists there will be no repeat when he faces Nunez in a different red shirt this time around.

Speaking to Voetbal International, he said: “I immediately thought of it [Nunez’s goal last season]. The intention is that I will be the boss of him now.”

Liverpool's new Champions League campaign is scheduled to start on September 6/7. Other group stage matches will take place on September 13/14, October 4/5, October 11/12, October 25/26 and November 1/2. Exact dates are due to be confirmed shortly.

Both Liverpool and Ajax have huge pedigree in Europe's elite knockout competition. The Reds have won the trophy six times, while Ajax have lifted the silverware on four occasions.

Both sides will have designs on reaching the final at the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul on June 10 - the scene of Liverpool's incredible fifth European Cup triumph in 2005.
