With Christmas just out of the way, many people are facing having to tighten their belts after spending the monthly budget on gifts and special food for the big day. But for those trying to make their money stretch consumer expert Tom Church from money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk has some top tips.
And he reckons there are plenty of options for those with just a fiver - as well as tips which mean a single person can do a weekly shop on less than £20. Heading into Aldi, just before Christmas Tom discovered a string of bargains to be had with just £5 and shared it to the Latest Deals TikTok.
His buys included 85p wok noodles, 16p spaghetti hoops and chicken & mushroom pasta for just 42p. The TikTok has now received over 1.1 million views, with comments including ‘LEMONADE FOR 49P alright let me in’ and ‘the custard creams never fail’.
However others said that the buys wouldn’t constitute a full week of groceries, with one person saying ‘What are you having for dinner this week? Pasta and custard creams’ while another said ‘can’t make a meal wv that mte rightguys (sic)’. So Tom decided to see just what it could cost for a week's worth of meals.
He said: ‘I was impressed with what I picked up in Aldi with just a fiver. The shop I did is a great top-up for those wanting to get some additional food cupboard staples, snacks and quick meals.
"However, I decided to take it one step further and see if I could get a full week of groceries for under £20. I managed to get everything in for just £17.26, which I think is a great price considering my budget menu includes classic meals such as tuna pasta bake and shepherd’s pie."
He said: "Before I went into Aldi, I did some research using their website. I searched for specific grocery items, such as chicken and bread, and filtered results so that the lowest prices appeared first. I found this method really useful, as I could note down the exact products to look out for in-store and ensure I got those extra savings in.
"By using this filter, I made some interesting discoveries. Firstly, I decided to make the budget breakfasts simple - the cheapest cereal, cornflakes, with milk. But I found that Aldi’s soya milk was much cheaper than their dairy milk. You get a litre of soya milk for 65p, whereas their dairy milk was £1.05 per litre. For a 40p saving, I’ll happily switch to soya!
"On the TikTok video, I shared a jar of tuna pasta bake sauce which was just 75p - I decided to see how much it would cost to make one. With a 52p tin of sweetcorn, 100g of cheddar for just 99p and four tins of tuna for £2.49, I was able to make my money really stretch. I would use two tins of tuna for this recipe, and keep the other two tins for tuna sandwiches for lunches later in the week.
‘I also shared a 34p tin of carrots, which I thought were such a good deal I got four tins. These stretched across two meals - shepherd’s pie and chicken rice casserole." At the time of the shop Aldi also had a deal on potatoes which were reduced to 15p, so they went well with the shepherd’s pie.
Tom added: "As for the casserole, I found 1kg of chicken legs for just £1.99 which I think is excellent value for money. I put together a menu to show it’s possible to get a full week of healthy meals for under £20 a week. Of course it doesn’t have to be followed to the letter, but hopefully it provides inspiration for those who are feeling the pinch at the moment."
