'I went inside my sister's home without permission - my husband owns it so I can'

You should never mix business with pleasure, or at least so the saying goes. Whether or not it is true can vary on a case-to-case basis.

Unfortunately, one family who learned this lesson the hard way have found themselves in a nasty dispute over a home.

The problem came about after a young mum was invited to live in the house her brother-in-law owns. While he normally rents out the property, he offered to let her stay there rent-free.

As the homeowner's wife - and the woman's older sister - explained in a post to Reddit. "She got pregnant unexpectedly in high school and me and my parents have been very supportive of her.

"My husband owns a townhome complex that he rents out and we decided to let her live in one of them rent free, since she's in college and we want her to focus on that."

However, the offer was not made with no conditions attached. "The only rule I had for her was to not allow her baby daddy move in. The guy is very much bad news," as the older sister explained.

Unfortunately, the couple suspected the man was staying at the house without their permission, and things soon came to a head.

Having noticed his car parked in the drive several times - and allegedly being 'lied' to when she asked her younger sibling about the matter - the sister took it upon herself to investigate.

"My sister went out town and this where I maybe wrong but I just needed to just see for myself, so I used the master key and went into the house and it’s pretty clear he’s living there," her post revealed.

Furious, she confronted her sibling and they ended up in a 'screaming match'. Explaining the argument, her post continued: "She was mad I went into her home without permission. I told her she needs to start paying rent or I'll be evicting her.

"My mom is on her side and said it was unnecessary that I went into her home when she wasn't there."

It was then that she turned to the internet, keen to find out who was in the wrong, but commenters struggled to come to a consensus.

Responding to the post on Reddit's 'Am I the A****e' forum, one person wrote: "NTA. She knew the rules, she broke them. She can pay her way, or live by the rules. It's a simple concept really." A second agreed: "Your house, your rules."

But another thought: "You had no reason to go into her home. You're trying to control her life and that's not ever going to work."
