If you like comedy, thrillers or a combo of both, you're very "Lucky" when it comes to the new TV shows premiering this week on Netflix, Apple TV and more of the best streaming services.
Will Ferrell brings his goofball dad energy back to the small screen in "The Hawk" as a washed-up golfer trying to recapture his glory days. The aforementioned "Lucky" stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a con artist whose latest job implodes. And "Ride or Die" pairs Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham as besties who end up in hot water because one of them is secretly an assassin.
Here's our guide to what's new on TV this week.
‘Lucky’ (Apple TV)
The vibes: “Out of Sight” meets “The Fugitive,” but make it a miniseries.
The plot: After a seemingly perfect score ends in disaster, Anya Taylor-Joy's Lucky wakes up to find the money gone and a whole lot of angry people on her tail. Hunted by an FBI agent (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) and a ruthless mob boss (Annette Bening), she's forced to lean on the criminal instincts she spent years trying to bury, even as family baggage threatens to drag her down.
Premiere date: Episodes 1-2 on Wednesday, July 15 at 12 a.m. ET
Where to watch: Apple TV
‘Ride or Die’ (Prime Video)
The vibes: “Thelma and Louise,” if one of them had a very particular set of skills.
The plot: Debbie (Octavia Spencer) thinks there are no secrets between her and lifelong best friend Judith (Hannah Waddingham) — until she learns Judith has been living a double life as an elite assassin. After a botched mission puts a target on both their backs, the pair go on the run across Europe, dodging killers, cops and all kinds of disasters.
Premiere date: All 8 episodes on Wednesday, July 15 at 3 a.m. ET
Where to watch: Prime Video
‘The Hawk’ (Netflix)
The vibes: Classic Will Ferrell goofiness, this time on a golf course.
The plot: Washed-up golf legend Lonnie "The Hawk" Hawkins is convinced he's still one tournament away from reclaiming greatness. Unfortunately, his ex-wife (Molly Shannon), hotshot son (Jimmy Tatro) and just about everyone else see things very differently, setting up a comeback fueled almost entirely by stubbornness and delusion.
Premiere date: All 10 episodes on Thursday, July 16 at 3 a.m. ET
Where to watch: Netflix
